法看護学の発展過程に関するデータ収集のため、8月24日から2週間、本学教員の柳井圭子、力武由美、エレーラ・ルルデス、石橋通江の４名に、伊藤てる子氏（元本学教員、現群馬医療福祉大学教員）と児玉裕子氏（産業医科大学教員）が加わり、計6名でアメリカ現地調査に行ってきました。
ところで、みなさんは法看護学について知っていますか？ 法看護学は事件や事故等法的問題に遭遇した人を対象に看護ケアを提供する看護学の一専門分野です。専門看護師として看護ケアを提供することはもちろんのこと、ケアの過程で知り得た情報の証拠採取と保存の権限が与えられていることが特徴です。1980年代にアメリカで始まり、90年代に発展し、認知されました。日本においても看護教育や看護実践に導入すべきたという議論がありますが、法看護学自体ほとんど知られていないのが実情です。
今回の調査では、テキサス州のヒューストン、ガルベストン、コロラド州のコロラドスプリングス、マサチューセッツ州のボストン、ペンシルバニア州のピッツバーグを駆け巡り、大学や病院の各施設を訪問しました。法看護学を大学院レベルの授業に初めて導入し、国際法看護学協会を立ち上げた、「法看護学の母」と呼ばれるDr. Virginia A. Lynch（写真最上段 Dr. Lynch自宅にて）をはじめ、法看護学界の第一線で活躍されているボストン・カレッジのDr. Ann Burgess他、法看護学教育に携わっている大学教員、医療機関で活動している法看護師の方々にお会いし、話を伺いました。また、The University of Texas Medical BranchとMemorial Hermann Texas Medical Center（写真二段目以降）では、法看護実践の一部を疑似体験する場を提供してくださいました。初対面にもかかわらず、また短い時間しか滞在できない私たちに配慮して、法看護学が患者の人権を守る上でいかに重要であるかをパッションとミッションを持って語り、豊富な事例とエヴィデンスを基にご教授くださいました。
今回お会いした法看護学のエキスパートたちは、異口同音、日本で法看護学が発展することを祈念し、そのための協力を惜しまないと明言されました。この熱い期待を真摯に受け止め、日本における法看護学の発展への道を切り拓くことができるよう、今回のアメリカでの貴重な体験を実りある成果につなげていきたいと思っています。
Last August, the 4 signing faculty, ex-faculty Teruko Ito, and co-researcher Hiroko Kodama to The Industrial Medical College, visited the United States to gather data on the development process of forensic nursing (FN).
Have we all heard about forensic nursing? FN is one of the newest specialty areas in nursing. It started to develop in the 1990’s and its importance has been internationally recognized. Introducing FN in nursing education and nursing practice in Japan is being currently discussed. FN is nursing care delivered to individuals who have been involved in legal issues. When such a patient presents, forensic nurses collect evidence during the nursing process and preserve it to help the criminal justice system.
This first research trip included visits to FN lecturers and specialists in universities and health facilities in Texas (UTMB, Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center, Colorado, Massachusetts (Boston College) and Pennsylvania (University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University) -Due to space limitations we only show 4 pictures- . In Colorado we were fortunate to be invited by Dr. Virginia Lynch (also known as the mother of FN) to visit her in her own house. Dr. Lynch is not only the first nurse educator to teach FN at the graduate level, but she is also the founding president of the International Association of Forensic Nurses. She talked to us as though it were not the first time we were meeting.
All the knowledge and invaluable experiences acquired have been highly inspiring and we feel the responsibility of spreading what we have learned to contribute to the development of FN in Japan.
