 The
history of the Red Cross goes back to 1859 at the battle
of Solferino in Italy when Henri Dunant devoted himself
to the care of the sick and wounded irrespective of friend
or foe. This led to the establishment of the International
Committee of the Red Cross in 1864.
The Japan Red Cross Society began in 1877 during the
Seinan Civil War when Tsunetami Sano, Yuzuru Ogyu and
others founded the Philanthropy Society called the Hakuaisha
based on the same idea as Dunant. The Hakuaisha changed
its name to the Japanese Red Cross in 1887 and was affiliated
with the International Red Cross with approval by the
International Committee in the same year.
The nursing education at the Japan Red Cross Society started
at the Japan Red Cross Society Hospital where first nurses
were trained, and many more professionals have been produced
since. With these history and tradition, the Japan Red
Cross Society formed the Japanese Red Cross Women's Junior
College of Nursing (now the Japanese Red Cross College
of Nursing) in 1954 and has worked toward elevating the
nursing education to a higher level.
The Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of
Nursing was established in 2001 as the fourth college
of the Japan Red Cross Society.
